"The Truth Trials" Author - Hal Bradstreet "An Odyssey From Religion To Spirituality" Below is an excerpt from his writings "The Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living" Socrates Apology I have no way of knowing what these words of Socrates mean to you, but in his time they stirred, and even now they stir, controversy. Allow me to tell you what they mean to me even as I write these lines: I have long been a seeker of truth. That means, to start with, I needed to have an open mind to those notions that conflicted with a religious up-bringing of many years. I began to ask questions, of myself, such as; WHO am I? Really, that is. WHAT am I? Is there more than can be seen in the mirror? WHERE did I come from? Did my life begin at conception? WHEN did life on earth begin? When, or, will it end? WHY am I here in the first place? To what purpose? And then, having come to grips with all those questions; HOW then should I now live? As the answers came over the years, the mind opened accordingly. Or, did the mind open first---I have no way of knowing, except that I had to throw off a lot of religious baggage along the way. I examined my life---and re-examined it---and am still examining it. My goal is that in the end---my life will have been worth living. The Truth Trial Transcripts describe this tension between religion (especially, the fundamentalist church) and Truth as revealed to me through much investigation and study. It is inevitably a tension between Spirituality and religion. I trust you also will find answers to your most deeply examined questions as you read them. May God bless your quest for Truth. To give you a sample of the tension I’ve described allow me to insert a portion of the opening statements of both the Prosecution and the Defense in the first of the six Truth Trials. We have the Defense lawyer A.G. Nostic beginning his statement: The lawyer representing I M Truth addresses the assembled jurors; Good morning ladies and gentlemen of the jury, my name is A. G. Nostic. I come from a long line of non-believers and for that reason my good friend H. Bradley Streeter has retained me, as an officer of this court, to represent the legal interests of Truth. My credentials are not important but I can assure you that Truth will be defended vigorously. Allow me to make a connection here that’s very important to our case; Mr. Streeter has been approved by this court to represent Truth as an alternate to Truth appearing in person, which could never happen in that Truth is an invisible entity and in need of an advocate with a voice for these proceedings. Mr. Streeter will therefore take the stand and act as the representative not only for Truth but for several expert witnesses who cannot be present for various reasons. Mr. Streeter has been allowed to do this because he has become a valued repository for Truth and is well acquainted with all of the witnesses who will be called, and their views, and can speak for them. I admit this is an extraordinary lenience the court has conceded but altogether necessary to allow this false charge to be defended. And, in closing his opening statement Nostic concludes: It is my intention, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, to put before you more than enough evidence that you will come to no other conclusion than that my client is not guilty of any crime, not the least that of blasphemy. Nor should Truth be relegated to any prison of despair or be thrown back into the gutter of misunderstanding and discrimination, out of which my partner plucked it these many years ago. I have only one goal in mind for the outcome of these proceedings; that of winning this case no matter who is in the right. However, Mr. Streeter’s motive is that you, the jury, and everyone, in earshot of my voice may come to know Truth as the dear friend and companion as Mr. Streeter has, having listened to that voice for so long. The Prosecutor representing the church begins his statement: The Prosecutor gets out of his chair, walks around his table and addresses the Jury: Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury I will be brief. My name is Dr. I. B. DeChurch, L.L.D., PhD and P.D.Q. And, like others in this room, I too am an officer of this court. I’m sure you have all heard of me so I will not regale you with my stellar background in law, philosophy, religion or alacrity. What you may not know, however, is that I pray at many public gatherings and I write my own prayers. I thank God I am not like that A. G. Nostic who is a sinner. I am much in demand for my oratory and sermons in general. You may hear one or more of them in this proceeding. As you might conclude, I am well equipped and well prepared for this inquisition...er...ah, interrogation, that can only lead to a conviction of this insidious Truth. It is my intention to show to you and this court the reasons for bringing these charges of blasphemy against I. M. Truth., and to prove them in this court of law. Not the least of which deal with the distortion of biblical statements and history so long revered by our forebears. These historical documents have been preserved by the Holy Spirit down through these many centuries and come to us today in their untouched, unvarnished condition. It is the distortions of the very tenets and foundations of our faith that has put this entity on trial here today. The peccadilloes to which this court referred earlier are proof of one of the key tenets of our belief, and that Truth would destroy--that of original sin. Anyone who breaks the rules of the church is in a state of sin and must be saved from it or be absolved of it through confession or absolution. It appears that in Mr. Streeter’s case such absolution could run into a lot of money. But that’s a good thing—for the church. The church is a huge body of believers doing the will of God and led by the Holy Spirit. We do good things. We send missionaries to all parts of the world to preach the gospel of salvation to all people, just as our beloved Lord Jesus commanded us to do when He said; ”Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel.” And now comes this one who calls himself Truth who would tear down all this good work and lead everyone into perdition. We cannot allow that to happen. Our very lives and livelihoods are at stake. Think of what would happen if Truth were embraced universally; church buildings might be abandoned, preachers, priests, nuns, deacons, deaconesses, trustees and elders would be out of their jobs, not to mention the poor missionaries. What would happen to them? They would have to return home and find jobs—JOBS, I say. Why, preachers would have to get jobs also, and drive smaller automobiles; live in smaller houses that they would have to buy themselves. What kind of work do you suppose they could find given their education and experience? What a travesty this would be! And people would no longer tithe or bring their alms, offerings and absolutions to the church so that our building programs could go forward and our workers be paid. What are people supposed to do with all that money—give it to each other? Heaven forbid! I tell you this. Until my dying gasp I will not let this happen. I will bring evidence of this blasphemy before you and this court and you will see for yourselves how insidious and dangerous this Truth really is. You will then find Truth guilty and worthy of not only the condemnation of the church but the whole world, and further, worthy to be thrown into prison and shut out of our lives forever. DeChurch, red-faced and sweating profusely, turns and walks back to his seat at the Prosecutor’s table. With that the fireworks begin between Truth and the church. "About the Author" Hal Bradstreet I was, and still am, an engineer. At present I have closed down my business, which I operated for some twenty six years. Not that I have entirely retired, I now work as an estimator for construction projects to keep my mind active.
